Moths

You may be surprised to know that there are in excess of 2400 species of moth found in the UK, of these there are a few that can described as a nuisance including:-

Common Clothes Moth

The caterpillars of this moth are considered a serious pest, as they can derive nourishment from clothing – in particular wool, but many other natural fibers – and also, like most related species, from stored produce.

Brown House Moth

Probably originally native to Asia, the Brown House Moth has been introduced to other regions by human activity and is found almost worldwide today. It is often considered a pest due to the feeding activity of its caterpillars which include cereals and other seeds, potatoes, furs, textiles and dog biscuits.

Oak Processionary Moth

The Oak Processionary moth caterpillars are pests in oak forests and pose a health hazard because of their poisonous hairs, with up to 63,000 pointed defensive bristles on a single caterpillar which contain an urticating toxin that may cause skin irritation and asthma. Infestations of this caterpillar were first found in several locations in London in 2006 and pose a significant health risk.

Disease & Dangers

While most moths do not pose a significant health risk to humans, their larvae can cause severe damage to clothes, fabrics, furs, leather and carpets before large numbers of flying moths are seen. Minor infestations can easily be dealt with using DIY products, however, a severe infestation may require our help to deal with the issue. If you suspect you have an Oak Processionary Caterpillar nest, please do not attempt to deal with this yourself.
